Coral Reefs Project with Candalia and SeaTrees

The Bali Coral Project

Known as ‘rainforests of the sea’, coral reefs are the largest living structures on earth and support 25% of marine life. The conservation of these ecosystems is vital to coastal protection, scientific research, medication, fishing, eco-tourism, and more.

This project restores the degraded coral reefs on Nusa Penida Island in Bali, Indonesia. SeaTrees also partners with the local nonprofit organisation Ocean Gardener to employ local Balinese fishermen. They restore the reef and monitor the regeneration until it can survive on its own.

Each piece of coral we grow…

  • Creates critical habitat for 500+ species, many of which are currently considered vulnerable to extinction
  • Rapidly restores biodiversity to the reef and creates a new thriving ecosystem
  • Provides sustainable employment for the people in the Nusa Penida region of Bali, Indonesia. Crucial at a time when the pandemic had devastated Bali’s tourism-based economy
  • Supports over a dozen local families
  • Provides resources for local education and training opportunities

About SeaTrees

As a program of the 501c3 nonprofit Sustainable Surf, SeaTrees plants, protects and restores blue carbon coastal ecosystems around the world in order to reverse climate change.

SeaTrees directly supports communities and scientists who protect and restore these ecosystems, which are 5-10x more effective at removing carbon from the atmosphere than terrestrial forests. This restoration includes planting mangrove trees, restoring kelp forests, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and conserving coastal watersheds.

Their projects do a lot more than sequester carbon. The regeneration and protection of these ecosystems provide critical habitat for countless species, sustainable employment for local communities, and protection from climate change impacts.
